Tasting at the Table

When a server brings you a wine glass with just a sip from the bottle of Chardonney that you are about to order, he is not asking you to judge the quality of the wine, but just to make sure that it has not gone bad.

Place your fingers at the base of your glass and swirl the wine a little bit (this "opens up" its flavors), lift the glass to your nose and mouth, enjoy its bouquet and then sip, holding the wine in your mouth for a moment before swallowing. If it tastes all right, simply say "Thank you" to the server. The server will then pour for the rest of your party and leave the bottle.

Corks or Screw Caps?

Corks may sometimes be a challenge but may I suggest that screw top wine caps may not be perfect either. For ease of storage, many will store wine bottles on their sides. Some have discovered that screw caps can leak. This may be a small percentage, but one wine cellar owner has reported a higher percentage of leaking screw caps, than leaking cork sealed bottles.
